And, these courageous women have suffered, they have been broken and they have "handled" much in their brokeness not only with courage, but with grace and dignity.
Most of these women are moms who have suffered the loss of a child. Some have been broken by things in their life even before the loss of their child. Some have suffered multiple losses, have been broken by illness, divorce, heartbreak, abuse, betrayal amd neglect, and still they get up, look up and live on.
How is it that so many of our heroes in life have suffered? Perhaps, it is in our sufferings that we find that wellspring of eternal hope and strength that has been planted in us by God the Father.
I have also known some very strong-willed, stubborn women, a completely different group of women who typically suffer, because they are hard-headed or stiff-necked in response to everyday living and life circumstances. I prefer to be around women who have been broken and who are humble and handle all that comes their way with humility, but I know that the "hard-headed, stiff-necked" women probably need more of God's love, comfort and mercy than the humble, surrendered women, because they have yet to experience the fullnes of His blessed love and healing peace.
There is a verse in the Bible that I consider one of my life's verses, "In my weakness, He is strong!" Every time I have been knocked down, wounded, afflicted or broken, I consider it an opportunity to tap into the comfort, hope and strength that is available to me by God's grace, and what a life-changing comfort, hope and strength I find in Him.
What do you do in those times when you have lost hope or are weak? Who comes into your brokeness and encourages and helps you to look for the way of peace and restoration? For me, it has always been Jesus, my constant source of strength, but I am also thankful for those people He brings into my life who have the gifts and use their gifts of genuine kindness, compassion and mercy that they share freely. I have found these humble, caring and compassionate people are a rare find indeed and this is precisely the kind of person I want to be, one of the broken ones who God has put back together His way.
